Full Story:

SAN DIEGO, CA – May 17, 2012 – Iomega, an EMC® company (NYSE: EMC) and
a global leader in data protection, today announced the new Iomega®
StorCenter™ px12-450r Network Storage Array, multi-protocol networked
data storage for small and medium business, remote office/branch office
installations and distributed enterprises. The StorCenter px12-450r
features the new Intel Xeon Processor E3-1200 v2 Product Family, 8GB
RAM, improved user supportability and is ready for 4TB* hard disk drives
(HDD) and 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) networks. Additionally, the
StorCenter px12-450r utilizes the latest version of the EMC® LifeLine™
software, an advanced operating system that makes EMC’s
enterprise-class expertise and cloud capabilities available to a broad
range of users.

The new StorCenter px12-450r Network Storage Array is designed for
advanced functions including dedupe, VDI, database and storage-based
applications. Examples of emerging applications include video management
systems (VMS) for surveillance and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise running
natively on the storage (see companion Iomega new’s release issued
today).

Executive Quotes:

“With the introduction of the new StorCenter px12-450r, Iomega
continues to expand its high-performance PX series NAS product line to
meet the storage solution needs of our SMB customers,” said Mike
Nikzad, Chief Operating Officer, Iomega Corporation. “Designed with
the latest Intel processing architecture at its core, Iomega is first to
market with the highest performance at the best value available in its
class. Built with scalable server-class storage, the StorCenter
px12-450r is also designed to support today’s cloud and virtualization
storage demands while having enough available headroom to meet future
storage and application growth opportunities.”

“The new Iomega StorCenter px12-450r is one of the industry’s first
network storage arrays to include the recently announced next-generation
Intel Xeon Processor E3-1200 v2 Product Family,” said David Tuhy,
general manager of Intel’s Storage Group. “The new Intel Xeon
Processor E3-1200 v2 Product Family is the first to feature Intel’s
tri-gate transistor architecture, a 3D structure that is designed to
help boost the chip’s performance while driving down power
consumption. The new Intel Xeon Processor puts products like the Iomega
px12-450r in a position to support today’s demanding workloads like
database management, de-duplication and virtualization, and the
capability for even more demanding I/O tasks like 10 gigabit Ethernet.
In addition, utilizing the new Xeon Processor E3-1200 v2 Product Family
in the px12-450r is ideal for supporting customers’ needs to process
more information directly on the storage device.”

Anatomy of the new Iomega StorCenter px12-450r Network Storage Array

The heart of the new StorCenter px12-450r is the new low-power Intel
Xeon Processor E3-1200 v2, coupled with 8GB memory. The multicore
processor ex
cels at multi-threaded storage workloads like multi-LUN
iSCSI and multi-client virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). The 8GB
memory assists those workloads and easily supports memory-intensive
tasks like the Avamar source-based deduplicating agent, included with
all Iomega StorCenter PX series storage products.

The new StorCenter px12-450r is a ground-up redesign of Iomega’s
previous top-of-the-line model, the StorCenter px12-350r. The StorCenter
px12-450r is available in diskless and partially populated
configurations, enabling users to start small in terms of storage
capacity, or provide their own HDDs and grow as workloads and storage
capacity dictate. The px12-450r is qualified with a broad range of 1TB,
2TB and 3TB consumer and Server Class Series HDDs, as well as upcoming
4TB HDDs. All product configurations and expansion drives for the
px12-450r available from Iomega include Server Class Series ATA drives
for the highest reliability.

The new px12-450r also supports solid state drives (SSDs), ideal for
large amounts of small block random I/O workloads such as virtualization
and database. The px12-450r expands on the px12-350r’s user
serviceability with a new mechanical design that makes the processor
complex user-replaceable by removing just two thumbscrews. All product
configurations include disk drive trays to simplify capacity
expansion-users just add HDDs.

One of the key advantages of adopting leading-edge technology like the
new Intel Xeon Processor is that the StorCenter px12-450r can handle
advanced workloads to increase the lifespan of the network storage array
for end users. The multicore processor and 8GB memory are ready for the
next generation of storage-based applications. The px12-450r includes 2
PCIe slots to further expand the px12-450r’s capabilities,
particularly by adding I/O connectivity, like 10GbE when it becomes
mainstream. Finally, the px12-450r is ready to support 4TB HDDs,
expected in wide availability by the end of this year.

Software Enhancements

The StorCenter px12-450r features two software enhancements that are
well matched to its leading-edge hardware complex. The px12-450r is the
industry’s only sub $10K storage array to run the McAfee VirusScan
Enterprise product natively on the storage. Also the px12-450r can run
Linux applications created with Iomega’s LifeLine Software Development
Kit (SDK).

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is an enterprise-class endpoint security
product which runs natively on the px12-450r, no external server
required. Enterprise-class threat scanning means 1) threat
identification and remediation through McAfee’s global network and
reach and 2) consistent features (e.g., scanning options) and behaviour
(e.g., management and reporting) with the rest of McAfee’s VirusScan
family. McAfee VirusScan will be included on all Iomega PX series
network storage products when it becomes available, expected in the
second half of this year.

Cloud Storage For Free For Dropbox Dropquest Participants …

May 16th, 2012

A few days ago, Dropbox began its annual contest Dropquest. It’s an online scavenger hunt that leads to participants getting free cloud storage. DropBox describes the contest:

Dropquest is a multi-step scavenger hunt that has you solve a series of puzzles (inspired by the likes of MIT’s mystery hunt or notpron [though not nearly as time/effort-consuming]). Everyone who completes Dropquest will get at least 1 GB of space (even if you participated last year). Also, everyone starts at the same time, but the questers who finish the soonest get amazing prizes!

The prizes are listed as follows:

1st place (1): Dropbox employee hoodie, LIMITED EDITION Dropbox Hack Week t-shirt, Dropbox drawing signed by the entire Dropbox team, invitation to help write the next Dropquest, 100 GB for life!

2nd place (10): Dropbox employee hoodie, Dropbox t-shirt, 20 GB for life!

3rd place (15): Dropbox t-shirt, 5 GB for life!

4th place (50): 2 GB for life!

5th place (100): 1 GB for life!

Dropquest started on Saturday, and they quickly had a winner, but according to Dropbox’s last update on Twitter, there were still plenty more prizes to give out. If you go to the Dropquest site, it appears to still be open.

Android Emulator, Trusted CA, and Persistent Storage

May 13th, 2012

UPDATE – An easier way to do this can be found on our update post here

Android periodically updates it’s SDK and somtimes when this happens, old methods for importing a Trusted CA, necessary to proxy SSL traffic, will fail and you must find a new solution. Technically speaking, it’s not necessarily the import that is the problem, it’s saving those changes between restarts of the emulator. If you’ve worked with the emulator you’ll note that after importing a Trusted CA such as BurpSuite’s certificate, the changes only take effect once you’ve rebooted the emulator. In other words, you actually have to restart the emulator, and without these steps, you’ll lose your updated Trusted CA list.

Using Android SDK 19, the solution was to move a temporary file and rename it. Let’s begin:

After creating your Android Virtual Device (AVD) named “test”….

Step 1 – Run the emulator

Step 2 – While running, pull the cacerts.bks file

Step 3 – Get the keytool

Step 4 – Import the PortSwigger SSL Certificate into the cacerts.bks file w/ keytool
NOTE: Exporting PortSwigger SSL Certificate instructions here - http://carnal0wnage.attackresearch.com/2010/11/iphone-burp.html

Step 5 – Remount the emulator /system folder with read-write permissions

Step 6 – Push the cacerts.bks file up onto the emulator

Step 7 – Move the tmp file to your local avd directory and rename it to system.img

Step 8 – Restart, rm cacerts.bks, pull down the copy from emulator, ensure certificate still exists in cacerts.bks file

The reason this data persisted was because we moved the temporary copy (emultor-<random string>) from /tmp/android-<myname>/ and renamed it to system.img. Lastly, we placed the image file in the ~/.android/avd/test.avd/ directory.

hack on,

How does the storage on an xbox 360 affect it? | Organize Closets

May 13th, 2012

Question by ryan: How does the storage on an xbox 360 affect it?
Im looking at buying an xbox 360 and want to know whats the diffrence between storage space? and will the storage affect the anount of games i can play, etc.?

Best answer:

Answer by N O
Storage will affect how many game saves you can have, I think. I know it determines how much download space you will have. If you think you will buy a ton of games or download a lot from XBoxLive, you might want more storage. However, the 360 comes with a decent sized HD already so if you don’t think you will buy a new game every week, you probably won’t need anything bigger. Deleting downloaded previews and demos after you are done with them also saves storage space.
